The same walking route can feel easy to one person and demanding to another. Relative intensity describes effort in relation to the person doing the activity. It is different from labeling a route or sport as universally easy or hard.
What the talk test means
CDC describes a practical rule of thumb: during moderately intense aerobic activity, a person can generally talk but not sing. During vigorous effort, speaking more than a few words usually requires a pause for breath. This is a broad observation, not a diagnostic test or a requirement to push until speech becomes difficult.
The test does not measure oxygen levels, rule out illness, or certify that an activity is safe for you. A person following a medical or rehabilitation plan should use the monitoring instructions supplied for that plan.
Describe your own effort
When recording activity, a short description such as comfortable conversation or noticeably harder breathing may be more understandable later than a device zone whose settings you have forgotten. Include the activity and conditions so the note has context.
Avoid comparing two people's descriptions as if they were competing scores. Fitness, individual circumstances, and the demands of the activity affect relative effort. Likewise, a device estimate and the way an activity feels may not tell exactly the same story.
Use the observation for a question
If you are unsure what level of effort is appropriate, take a concrete example to a qualified professional: the activity, duration, how it felt, and any symptoms. Do not use an apparently reassuring talk test to dismiss new or concerning symptoms.
The useful outcome is a clearer description of movement. It helps replace vague labels such as a good workout with information that can support planning and, when needed, a clinical conversation.
