Dreams are often associated with REM sleep because vivid dream reports are common after REM awakenings. Dream experiences can also occur during non-REM sleep. Remembering a dream therefore does not prove that a person was in REM, and failing to remember one does not prove that dreaming was absent.
Dreaming remains an active area of research. Scientists can study brain activity and reports after awakenings, but they cannot simply read a complete dream from a routine sleep recording.
A sleep state and an experience are different kinds of information
REM is a physiological state identified through patterns including brain activity, eye movements, and muscle activity. A dream is a subjective experience reported by the sleeper.
Those two kinds of information can be compared, but they are not interchangeable. A recording can indicate REM while the person recalls no dream after awakening.
Conversely, a person awakened from non-REM sleep may describe imagery, thoughts, scenes, or a narrative. The experience may differ from a typical vivid REM report, but it is still relevant to the study of dreaming.

How researchers study a private experience
One approach is to awaken participants at selected times and ask what was happening in their minds just before waking. Researchers can compare those reports with the preceding physiological activity.
A primary study of the neural correlates of dreaming examined reports after awakenings in both REM and non-REM sleep, alongside electrical brain recordings.
This design helps distinguish the sleep state from the presence of a reported experience. It also has limits: a report depends on recall, the wording of the questions, and the transition into wakefulness.
The research supports the conclusion that dreaming is not exclusive to REM. It does not show that a consumer device can identify a dream's meaning, emotional importance, or accuracy.
Recall is an additional step
Experiencing something and remembering it later are different processes. That is true while awake and remains relevant to dreams.
An awakening may provide an opportunity to remember a dream, but the memory can fade quickly. Attention to the dream, the circumstances of waking, and what happens immediately afterward can affect the report.
Someone who rarely recalls dreams cannot conclude that the brain never produced them. Someone who remembers several dreams has not necessarily obtained more beneficial sleep than a person who remembers none.
Recall is therefore a poor standalone measure of sleep quality. It tells us something about what was accessible after waking, while leaving much of the night unobserved.
Dreams are not literal playback
Dreams can include fragments of recent events, older memories, familiar people, emotions, and unusual combinations. The presence of a real detail does not make the whole dream an accurate record.
Memory itself is reconstructive, and dream narratives can be especially discontinuous. A scene may feel convincing during the experience while containing impossible relationships or abrupt changes.

A dream can be personally meaningful without serving as reliable evidence that an event happened, that another person has a particular intention, or that a future event will occur.
There is no established dictionary for every dream
People often search for a fixed explanation of a symbol: falling, losing teeth, missing an appointment, or being chased.
Scientific research does not provide a universal code that turns each image into one hidden message. Personal experiences and current concerns may influence dream content, but an interpretation remains an interpretation.
It can be reasonable to reflect on how a dream felt or what it brought to mind. That reflection is different from treating the content as a diagnosis.
The distinction protects the useful personal question—“What did this remind me of?”—from becoming an unsupported factual conclusion about the mind or body.
Stage estimates cannot confirm what happened in a dream
A wearable may display a REM interval that seems to match a remembered dream. The apparent agreement can be interesting, but it does not validate every stage label on the chart.
As the guide to wearable sleep reports explains, consumer devices generally estimate stages indirectly. Their output should be understood alongside those measurement limits.
A mismatch is also unsurprising. Dreaming can occur outside REM, recall timing can be uncertain, and device classification can be imperfect.
The chart and the memory are two incomplete observations. Combining them does not automatically produce a precise account of the night.
When the experience itself matters
An occasional vivid or unpleasant dream is different from repeated distress that disrupts sleep or daily functioning. The latter can be worth discussing with a clinician.
Descriptions are useful: how often the episodes occur, whether the person wakes frightened, whether sleep is avoided, and whether someone observes unusual movements or injury.
There is no need to decode the dream before seeking support. The distress, disruption, and observable behavior can be relevant regardless of the narrative.
Dream science is most useful when it separates what is known from what remains uncertain: dreams can arise in more than one sleep state, remembering them is an additional process, and their personal vividness does not turn them into a precise physiological measurement.
